Carbon Monoxide Research Trust

The Carbon Monoxide Research Trust is the owner of the CORGI Brand.

It’s a registered charity established in 2005 to reduce the incidents of death and serious injury from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Formerly known as The Gas Safety Trust, The Carbon Monoxide Research Trust became the UK’s leading gas safety research charity, with the key objectives of improving gas and fossil fuel safety.

The focus of the Trust is funding research and data collection relating to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Their vision is a world where people are not exposed to carbon monoxide (CO). They fight CO poisoning through funding ground-breaking scientific research which improves their understanding of its effects on health.

A key focus is research, as this will make the most significant difference to everyone exposed to CO poisoning, now and in the future. The Trust provides grant funding, advice and support to organisations wishing to carry out research and evidence-gathering regarding safety.

Since 2013 the Trust has provided funding to a wide range of academic bodies, statutory organisations, charities, voluntary groups, social housing associations, local authorities, and others that meet their chosen areas of focus for research.

To date, the Trust has invested almost £3 million in research projects and is committed to investing a further £1.5 million in the next five years.

The CO Research Trust is involved in a wide range of events which include roundtable discussions, workshops that bring experts together, as well as industry and working group meetings, with the aim of improving the broader understanding of CO poisoning.

CORGI Services Ltd is a charity fund-raising arm and donates its profits to the CO Research Trust, enabling them to carry out this vital work.

The Future

The UK government has committed to reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, and finding an alternative to fossil fuels is key to achieving the net zero target. As part of this, the government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy tackles emissions from homes and businesses, and phasing out natural gas boilers is a vital part of that strategy.

From 2025 building new homes will be subject to extremely tough carbon targets, which means it won’t be practical for them to have gas boilers installed. However, this doesn’t mean existing gas boilers can’t still be used or that they can’t be replaced it in the future, even after the 2025 deadline.

Low-carbon alternatives to natural gas include Air Source Heat Pumps, Hydrogen Gas Boilers and Solar Thermal Panels.

CORGI is committed to supporting a low-carbon future, which sits very well with our vision of being trusted to bring comfort, safety and security to the nation’s homes.
