Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms – a small price to pay.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a killer and each year around 15 people are killed by Carbon Monoxide from faulty gas appliances.
Symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to those of a viral infection (a bit like Flu) and include drowsiness, weakness, headaches, nausea and pains in the chest.  If anyone in your house has these symptoms whilst using a gas appliance, turn it off immediately and contact a Gas Safe Registered Engineer and also consult your doctor.

Why is ventilation important?

Gas appliances need a continuous supply of fresh clean air for safe and efficient operation. In its simplest form, gas appliance are of one of three types – either open-flued, room-sealed or flueless.
  • Room-sealed appliance take their air for combustion via the flue system and as their name implies, have their combustion process sealed from the room in which they are installed. The flue system, which typically terminates on an outside wall (they can also terminate in a vertical position i.e. on a roof) is of a concentric pipe system with the inner most pipe expelling products of combustion to the external atmosphere, whilst the outer pipe supplies combustion air into the appliance. Replacing a boiler – What to look for.

Q1. How do you know if it’s time to replace your existing gas boiler?
A1. There is no set timeframe as to how long a boiler will last. Many factors have a bearing from the original sizing of the boiler for the load, usage patterns, maintenance and service regimes, robustness of design, availability of spare parts, etc. However, an average life span for most domestic gas boilers is approximately 10 – 15 years.
