Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a killer and each year around 15 people are killed by Carbon Monoxide from faulty gas appliances.
Symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to those of a viral infection (a bit like Flu) and include drowsiness, weakness, headaches, nausea and pains in the chest. If anyone in your house has these symptoms whilst using a gas appliance, turn it off immediately and contact a Gas Safe Registered Engineer and also consult your doctor.
Some of the signs that Carbon Monoxide is present include:
For yours and your family’s safety, CORGI recommends that you fit an AUDIBLE Carbon Monoxide alarm in your house, just as you would fit an audible smoke.
Do not use the common ‘black spot’ detectors. Although relatively cheap, these only change colour when Carbon Monoxide is present. You wouldn’t fit a smoke alarm that you have to keep looking at and Carbon Monoxide is just as dangerous as smoke, with the added danger that it has no taste or smell – so you might not notice that it is there until it is too late.
What Alarm to buy?
There are a number of Carbon Monoxide alarms on the market, but CORGI recommends the use of audible carbon monoxide alarm with British Standard EN 50291 and a British or European approval mark..
Where can I get a Carbon Monoxide alarm?
Carbon monoxide alarms are available on-line (www.corgi-direct.com is just one place), DIY stores, installers and even some supermarkets, and should not cost more than £25. If you need any help choosing and fitting you Carbon Monoxide alarm, feel free to ask us questions, or contact your local registered engineer which you can find here.
REMEMBER: The best way to look after your gas appliance is with regular servicing by qualified and competent Gas Safe Registered installer.
